Common-axis rotationally symmetric anamorphic mirror combinations: application to synchrotron-radiation beam lines

Abstract

Mirror systems generated by rotating sequentially focusing conic-section line segments about a common axis defined by the end foci are shown to image point sources exactly onto point objects while providing anamorphic images. These characteristics are particularly useful for grazing-incidence optical systems, such as beam lines for synchrotron-radiation sources. Simple rules determine the minimum number of mirrors required and allow the mirror surfaces to be specified mathematically. Gratings based on these concepts are also discussed.
