Variational approach to modes and cross talk in core–ring guides

Abstract

Multilayered guides that can simultaneously transmit electromagnetic energy in more than one channel are becoming important in practice. A simple example is a core–ring guide in which both the central core and the outer ring serve as light guides. The modal analysis of such guides is important, partly because it permits the calculation of the coupling, or cross talk, between core and ring. We present a variational method for calculating the modal properties, compare its accuracy and convenience with other methods, and draw on it to discuss core–ring coupling that is due to evanescent-field overlap.
