Abstract
In this paper we show that the phase function in the region near a sphere becomes negative in a certain range of scattering angles as the size parameter is decreased and that the dimensionless distance from the sphere to the far field is given by the reciprocal of the value of the size parameter. Moreover, it is revealed that the Hottel–Sarofim–Dalzel–Vasalos criteria for the ratio of the center-to-center particle spacing to the diameter demarcating the independent scattering regime from the dependent scattering regime can be obtained from the condition that the near fields of the individual particles not overlap within the independent scattering regime.
