Statistical ray optics in double-passage geometries

Abstract

Backreflection of light from an object that has been illuminated through a deep random-phase screen is investigated theoretically for the case in which the intensity pattern incident upon the object is non-Gaussian owing to geometrical or ray effects. Geometrical enhancement of the ray density in the backscattering direction occurs, and it is shown that, for one class of objects, the enhancement implies that significantly improved resolution can be achieved by active imaging (in which the object is illuminated through the screen) as compared with the usual passive configuration (in which the object lies in ambient light that has not passed through the screen).
