Abstract
The theoretical expression of the mutual coherence function of a light wave modulated by two superposed ultrasonic waves is formulated on the basis of the Raman–Nath theory. The variations of the degree of spatial coherence with phase shift and ultrasonic powers are compared with experiment by interference measurements. The possibility of a simultaneous experimental determination of two ultrasonic powers is indicated. The theory is extended to periodic waves by introducing generalized Bessel functions of several variables: The harmonic phase terms are thus taken into account. Since they provide a numerical example, waves propagating with distortion are particularly investigated.
