New formalism of curvature losses of leaky modes in doubly clad slab waveguides

Abstract

An explicit loss formula of leaky modes in doubly clad slab waveguides is obtained by using a new formalism for the complex phase constant in perturbed dielectric waveguides when the waveguides are gently bent. It is shown that the bending losses of leaky modes are decreased when a suitable condition is satisfied for the thickness of the inner cladding.
