Abstract

Formulas describing generalized dispersion properties for both the transverse-electric modes and the transverse-magnetic modes in a multilayer planar waveguide are obtained. In terms of the effective thicknesses, two dispersion coefficients, the geometry dispersion coefficient and the material dispersion coefficient, are expressed in simple forms that have clear physical explanations. The formulas are applied to the study of the general dispersion properties of symmetrical five-layer waveguides in detail.
