2022 marks the 100-year anniversary of the birth of Emil Wolf, a groundbreaking researcher in many areas of physical optics who laid the foundation of modern optical coherence theory. A century later, his ideas continue to inspire scientists and motivate ongoing research on the wave properties of light. This feature issue will commemorate the legacy of Emil Wolf by highlighting the most recent and exciting developments in physical optics, with a specific focus on those areas where he was most active, and providing a retrospective of his influence.

Topics to be covered include but are not limited to:

  • Optical coherence
  • Inverse problems
  • Singular optics
  • Optical imaging
  • Polarization
