Generation of short pulses by stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers

Abstract

A new method for the generation of short optical pulses is demonstrated experimentally. The pulses are created from a phase-modulated cw signal that is propagated through an optical fiber under the influence of stimulated Brillouin scattering. It is possible to achieve repetition rates that are much larger than the Brillouin linewidth.
