Abstract

Planar nonlinear waveguides consisting of a linear substrate, a linear film, and a Kerr-type cladding, end-fire excited by the TE0 mode of a planar linear waveguide, are studied both numerically and analytically. We show that slab nonlinear waveguides have two different switching modes. The modes depend critically on the normalized wave number; the range of wave numbers that yields the maximum extinction ratio is determined.
