Abstract
Compton scattering of electrons from photons destroys neither electrons nor photons, permitting quantum nondemoliton measurements of the photon number. Here we consider a Compton scattering quantum nondemolition measurement of the photon number of an optical pulse traveling in a prepared optical fiber. A beam of electrons is directed through the evanescent field associated with the optical pulse, causing the electrons to scatter through an angle proportional to the pulse’s photon number.
