Comparison of nonlinear effects of linearly and circularly polarized picosecond pulses propagating in optical fibers

Abstract

The observation of polarization preservation of circularly polarized pulses and depolarization of linearly polarized pulses as functions of input intensity in single-mode nonbirefringent optical fibers is modeled by the cross-amplitude modulation effects between the left-hand and the right-hand circularly polarized pulses. These observations are attributed to an asymmetric nonlinear susceptibility tensor and may lead to novel designs for fiber polarization communication and computation systems.
