Ultrashort-pulse measurements applying generalized time–frequency distribution functions

Abstract

Measurements of ultrashort light pulses by means of a temporal gate and a frequency filter are represented by generalized time–frequency distribution functions in a clear form so that the physical relations become evident. The Wigner distribution function is best appropriate for frequency-resolved optical gating. Especially for Kerr frequency-resolved optical gating the measured signal function resembles the Wigner distribution function. A causal filter, on the other hand, is well described by the Page distribution function. Thus, for measurements where the gate is followed by a frequency filter, the Page distribution function is the appropriate function.
