Optical activity of doped and codoped Bi12SiO20 crystal

Abstract

The optical rotatory power of undoped and doped Al, P, Sc, Ta, Al+P, and Sc+Ta Bi12SiO20 crystals was studied. It is established that the influence of different dopants with the same valence on the optical activity is identical. Thus the larger significance of the valence in comparison to the ionic radius of dopants is confirmed. It is shown that at codoping, the dopants with different valences mutually compensate the influence of the other. As a rule, Al and Sc decrease optical rotatory power, whereas P and Ta increase it. The energies of the t12e transition located at the [DO4] oxide complex (D, dopant atom) are specified.
