Abstract

We explore the duality between metric and material properties in the Maxwell’s equations to design metamaterial blueprints for cladding control of waveguide modes. We illustrate designs for circular and rectangular waveguides. In contrast to standard material loading of waveguides, the proposed cladding does not produce hybrid modes. The cutoff frequencies of the propagating modes can be controlled by the material parameters in a simple fashion.
