One-dimensional photonic crystal with strained interfaces

Abstract

The influence of interfacial misfit strain and misfit dislocations on the transmission spectra of a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) is modeled. It is shown that they induce uniaxial and biaxial optical anisotropy, respectively, in strained sublayers on each side of the geometric boundary between adjacent materials. As a result, nonnegligible shifts in the position and the width of the photonic bandgaps appear, as compared to those of an ideal structure in which strain is not considered, and should be taken into account for any realistic modeling of multilayered PCs.
