Abstract

We demonstrated the terahertz (THz) emission and detection properties and ultrafast switching effect using a one-dimensional photonic crystal microcavity with a semiconductor. Using this structure as the emission source and electro-optic crystal, the THz emission and detection efficiencies were enhanced to several times relative to bare GaP crystal. The results of experimental and theoretical calculation using the transfer matrix method agree very well. Moreover, ultrafast switching effects were also observed using carrier excitation and recombination of the semiconductor after the optical pump. Finally, we demonstrated ultrafast THz switching with a response time of the order of 1 ps.
