Applying squeezed states to nonideal interferometers

Abstract

The prospect of increasing the sensitivity of highly sensitive interferometers is one of the frequently stated applications of squeezed states of the radiation field. We show that the improvement that one can hope for depends critically on the optical quality of the interference signal. For nonideal interferometers, having a fringe visibility smaller than unity, we show how noise terms previously negligible may become important. We use a simple model to study their effects and discuss some possible ways to correct for them.
