Er:YLiF44I11/2 energy levels revisited

Abstract

We use upconversion fluorescence excitation and IR absorption to make precise measurements of the Stark components of the 4I11/2 level of the Er3+ ion in YLiF4. We are able to specify all six components of this system unambiguously and to establish their energies to ±0.5 cm−1. By so doing, we are able to resolve discrepancies of greater than 100 cm−1 in the energies that are reported in the literature. A consistent interpretation of both the emission and the absorption data was possible with the Stark components of 4I11/2 found from our analysis.
