Abstract
An alternative treatment for the initiation of superfluorescence is given. It is explicitly demonstrated that superfluorescence can be initiated by the fluctuation of either the medium or the vacuum field, depending on the calculation scheme used. An alternative numerical simulation using a stochastic field input is shown to be equivalent to that of the usual initial fluctuating dipole distribution over the medium. In some cases this alternative treatment may be more convenient.
