Simulation of the chaotic behavior of a three-level nuclear spin–flip laser

Abstract

Previous studies of the nonlinear dynamics of the solid-state, nuclear spin–flip, ruby NMR laser relied on a two-level (spin-1/2) model. Chaotic behavior was found only with an increase of the phase space dimension on external modulation of some parameters. We present an extension to a three-level model that is obtained by deriving the eight coupled generalized Bloch equations for a spin-1 system. The dynamical behavior of this system is investigated by extended numerical simulations and is characterized in terms of phase plots, Lyapunov exponents, and fractal dimensions. Intrinsic chaotic solutions are found in a surprisingly large part of the parameter space. Moreover, we performed simulations both in a rotating frame and in the rigid frame in the laboratory. Using both frames provides us a test of the approximations that previously has not been available.
