Abstract

The absolute cross section for photoionization from the 3d24s4p 3P2 excited level of neutral Ti has been measured by using pulsed-laser excitation and ionization of Ti atoms in an atomic beam. Absolute cross sections are obtained by recording the depletion in 3P−3d24s2 3F fluorescence resulting from ionization. The wavelength range of the ionizing radiation was varied from 307 to 280 nm, corresponding to ionization from 2990 to 6070 cm−1 above the ground level of Ti+. The average cross section is approximately 2 × 10−17 cm2, and there is considerable structure in the cross section as a function of energy. We find good agreement between the shapes of the curves of the absolute cross section obtained from fluorescence depletion and the relative cross section obtained from total photoelectron yields as a function of ionizing wavelength.
