Transverse profile instabilities of the laser beam in the active media of pulsed excimer lasers

Abstract

We consider the instability of the fine-scale modulation of laser radiation propagating in the active medium of pulsed excimer lasers. We obtain increments of convection instability, taking into account gain saturation of the laser beam in the amplifier. The range of the transverse modulation period is defined, for which this instability exhibits significant temporal growth. We show that the instability increments for a KrF laser with a long-duration pulse are approximately equal to that of a pulsed electron-beam-controlled CO2 laser.
