Tailored Disorder—Materials Design for Advanced Photonic Applications

Submission Opens: 1 September 2022

Submission Deadline: 1 October 2022

Tailored disorder is a new design concept that exploits the photonic properties of material composites with deliberately introduced irregularities in their geometry and composition. It encompasses the study of fundamental scientific questions to subfields of materials science required for the technological implementation of optimized materials. A combination of inspiration from biological systems, physics results, chemical approaches, and validation from simulation, together with materials science and engineering, enables the innovative design of novel advanced photonic materials. This leads to novel, custom‐made devices, for a variety of photonic applications, with performance related to tailored disorder within 3D micro‐ and nanoarchitectures.

This feature issue will present the latest interdisciplinary research and advancements with respect to theory, innovative experimental procedures and advanced applications in this emerging field. Submissions in the overarching areas of optics, physics, and materials science and engineering (e.g., theory of disorder in optical and photonic systems, disordered photonic structures and architectures, metamaterials, and spectroscopic applications of disorder) are welcome.

Topics to be covered include but are not limited to:

  • Disordered systems / hyperuniformity
  • Complex optical systems
  • Photonic transport
  • Disordered and irregularly structured optical systems and devices
  • Nanophotonic systems

All papers need to present original, previously unpublished work, and will be subject to the normal standards and peer-review process of the journal. Manuscripts must be prepared according to the usual guidelines for submission to JOSA B and must be uploaded through the Prism submission system. When submitting, please specify that the manuscript is for the "Tailored Disorder—Materials Design for Advanced Photonic Applications" feature issue (choose from the drop-down menu).
