Feature Issue of Optics Express

3D Image Acquisition and Display: Technology, Perception and Applications

Submissions Open: 1 August 2023

Submission Deadline: 30 October 2023

Optics Express, welcomes submissions to a feature issue on "3D Image Acquisition and Display: Technology, Perception and Applications" in conjunction with the 3D Image Acquisition and Display: Technology, Perception and Applications topical meeting collocated with the Optica Imaging and Applied Optics Congress. Whereas meeting participants are particularly encouraged to submit their work, the 3D feature issue is open to all contributions in related areas.

3D imaging and displays are some of the most important applications of information systems. Currently, there are substantial research & development activities by industry and government in this field. The electronic giants in the US, Asia and Europe are trying to bring to market commercially viable augmented reality/virtual reality 3D devices, 3D TV, video, movie, and computer display systems. Defense industries are rigorously pursuing 3D techniques for visualization, targeting, and recognition. The medical field has clearly benefited from rapid advances and commercialization of 3D visualization and display technologies in terms of better diagnostics and improved TV surgery.

This feature issue will be a useful reference and education resource for graduate students in engineering, physics, photonics, and computer science; working electrical engineers, computer scientists, and physicists; and researchers and managers interested in the related fields. The feature issue intends to cover hardware, algorithms, devices, and systems for 3D imaging, 3D information processing, 3D visualization, wearable displays such as augmented reality displays, micro 3D displays, 3D displays, 3D TV/Video, and biomedical applications in these domains. It will describe recent developments, as well as the prospects and challenges facing 3D imaging, visualization, and display systems. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, virtual reality, augmented reality, biomedicine, microscopy, endoscopy, healthcare, autonomous vehicle, wearable displays, and entertainment. Research related to scientific understanding of 3D information display and perception, technological innovation on 3D image acquisition or display methods, and task-specific design and applications of 3D acquisition or display technology is of particular interest.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • 3D sensing and imaging technologies
    • 3D information acquisition methods and optical architectures
    • LIDAR sensing and imaging, structured illumination
    • 3D imaging in scattering media

    • Active and tunable optics for 3D systems
  • Perception, human factors and visual comfort of 3D information displays

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal. The standard Optics Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles. To be eligible for publication, an expanded conference paper needs to add value to the original conference proceedings and the conference paper number must be included in the cover letter at submission. Please see Optica Publishing Group's guidelines on expanded conference papers for details.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Optics Express and submit through our electronic submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue on 3D Image Acquisition and Display.
