Feature Issue of Optics Express

Augmented/Virtual Reality: Optics & Photonics

Submission Opens:15 June 2022

Submission Deadline: 15 October 2022

Optics Express, a Gold Open Access journal, welcomes submissions to a feature issue on "Augmented/Virtual Reality: Optics & Photonics."

In recent years, augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR) has been going viral among both the tech and academia, kickstarting a new wave of innovations. In the wake of this momentum, this feature issue will cover the state-of-the-art advances in AR/VR, primarily focusing on the optics and photonics for AR/VR while encouraging interdisciplinary crossover to inspire outside-the-box ideas. Problem-oriented research as well as all-encompassing reviews will be solicited.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Increase of field of view
  • Expansion/duplication of exit pupil
  • Trackable/adaptive exit pupil
  • Eyebox uniformity
  • Fresnel lenses/pancake lenses/flat optics
  • Vari-focal/multi-focal/zoom eyepieces/lenses
  • Occlusion between real and virtual objects
  • Integration of prescription/vision correction
  • Binocular overlap
  • Foveated pixelation/imaging
  • Retinal projection/scanning
  • Transparent/see-through displays
  • Head-up displays
  • Near-eye/head-mounted displays
  • Smart/electronic/active contact lenses
  • Intraocular implants/retinal prostheses/bionic eyes
  • Optical simulation software/tools for AR/VR
  • Metrology/measurement/benchmark/standardization for AR/VR
  • Ergonomics/human factors/cybersickness for AR/VR

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal. The standard Optics Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles and articles will be freely accessible immediately upon publication.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Optics Express and submit through Prism's manuscript submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue on Augmented and Virtual Reality.
