Feature Issue of Optics Express

Temporal and Spatiotemporal Metamaterials

Submission Deadline: 30 September 2022

Optics Express, a Gold Open Access journal, welcomes submissions to a feature issue on "Temporal and Spatiotemporal Metamaterials."

The study of time-varying metamaterials is currently one of the highly promising areas in metamaterials research. A major driving force in the field relates to electromagnetic metamaterials and metasurfaces, mainly due to recently developed experimental capabilities to modulate material parameters in time that are sufficiently fast and with enough strength.

Time-modulated metamaterials, whose material parameters (e.g. the electric permittivity) are dynamically modulated in time via an external mechanism, are currently attracting much attention from the metamaterials and photonics communities. They have recently emerged as a new paradigm for wave manipulation due to the unique properties they present, which allow these systems to break some of the fundamental barriers of conventional metamaterials, such as reciprocity and wave energy conservation.

The goal of this feature issue is to gather contributions from the active community working in the area of electromagnetic waves in time-varying metamaterials and related topics.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Experimental advances in temporally modulated media.
  • Theoretical and conceptual developments in time-modulated wave systems.
  • Time-modulated optical media, including but not limited to 2D materials and transparent conducting oxides.
  • Time-modulated metamaterials at low frequencies.
  • Microwave applications.
  • Space-time metamaterials and metasurfaces.
  • Non-reciprocity and non-Hermiticity.
  • Topological effects.
  • Nonlinearity and time-modulated systems.
  • Temporal and spatiotemporal superconducting metamaterials.

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal. The standard Optics Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles and articles will be freely accessible immediately upon publication.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Optics Express and submit through Prism's manuscript submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue on Temporal and Spatiotemporal Metamaterials.
