Abstract
We report extension of the Raman heterodyne technique for detection of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to superhyperfine spectra. NMR of the four nearest neighbor sets of 27Al (I = 5/2) surrounding Cr3+ in ruby has been observed with high sensitivity using optical excitation of the R1 line at 693.4 nm. Either excited-state or ground-state resonances could be selectively displayed by setting the sample temperature to 2 or 7.5 K, respectively. All 40 expected NMR resonances were observed, with good agreement obtained between calculated and experimental values.
