Abstract

The coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations governing optical pulse propagation in birefringent fibers are shown to have solitonlike solutions that mix the two polarizations. These are essentially governed by the scalar nonlinear Schrödinger equation and hence exhibit all the phenomena associated with that equation.
