Chromium-doped forsterite as a solid-state saturable absorber

Abstract

Saturation of near-infrared absorption in Mg2SiO4:Cr is observed, and the absorption cross section at 1.08 μm is estimated to be σa = (2.3 ± 0.3) × 10−18 cm2. Q switching and passive mode locking of a Nd:YAG laser have been realized with a Mg2SiO4:Cr saturable absorber.
