Coupled-mode formulation of parallel dielectric waveguides

Abstract

The conventional and improved coupled-mode theories for the evanescent coupling of parallel dielectric waveguides are reexamined with a phenomenological perturbation analysis. A defect in the improved theory in the strong-coupling regime is brought out in a general manner.
