Reduction of averaged soliton interaction forces by amplitude modulation

Abstract

An amplitude modulation with sign changes between successive solitons has a retiming action on the pulses and also reverses the signs of the interaction forces between them. One average and to first order, the latter effect cancels the interaction forces between the solitons. It depends little on the initial phase difference of the solitons, which presents an advantage over techniques based on soliton phase control only.
