Noise figure of upconversion-pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifiers: theory

Abstract

The noise figure of upconversion-pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifiers for operation in the first telecommunications window at approximately 850 nm is examined theoretically. It is shown that, within the constraints of the model, the lower limit in heavily pumped small-signal operation is 3 dB and that values close to this limit can be achieved at acceptable launched pump powers. The influence of a saturating signal is also investigated.
