Abstract
The existence of Turing patterns and of spatial solitary waves that arise from a polarization instability of the fundamental field is predicted in type II second-harmonic generation in a quadratically nonlinear optical cavity. The analogy between these dissipative structures and those studied in absorptive optical bistability is pointed out.
