Spectral dependence of ultraviolet-induced loss in coated and bare multimode germanium–phosphosilicate fibers

Abstract

The ultraviolet-induced loss in a moderately doped (N.A. = 0.23), multimode, graded-index, germanium–phosphosilicate-core fiber has been measured. Results are presented here for coated and uncoated fiber at discrete wavelengths from 531 to 1060 nm. The added loss fits an exponential band-edge dependence within experimental error. The loss penalty that must be accepted when using an ultraviolet-cured coating can be obtained from these results.
