Avalanche optoelectronic downconverter

Abstract

An optoelectronic heterodyne optical receiver employing an avalanche photodiode as both mixer and optical detector is demonstrated. The device can eliminate the need for low-noise, high-gain postdetection amplification in optical frequency-domain reflectometers.
