Abstract

A passive, bulk device that monitors two orthogonal polarizations simultaneously is described. The amount of power that can be diverted to the monitoring ports can be varied from 0 to 100%. A single device is capable of monitoring multiple inputs independently. We also discuss other potential applications, which include a simple optical tap and a polarization-independent variable attenuator.
