Abstract
A general N × N coupled planar waveguide array operating as a switch is examined, in which an input to any channel can be transferred to any other guide. One, and only one, choice of coupling parameters and detuning parameters achieves switching from one guide to a specified other guide. Therefore, an N × N waveguide switch requires independent control of coupling parameters and detuning parameters and may be difficult to realize in practice.
