We are delighted to announce the 2018 recipient of the OMEx Emerging Researcher Best Paper Prize. The prize, now in its second year, recognizes a student or early-career researcher (within five years of earning his/her highest degree) who is the first author of a paper that a committee of OMEx editors judged to be outstanding. The selection committee was again chaired by Deputy Editor Juejun Hu, and consisted of associate editors representing a range of topics across the scope of the Journal. They were responsible for identifying a winner from among all the papers published in 2018 based on criteria including the scientific significance, quality, and presentation of the results.

The winning paper, “GST-on-silicon hybrid nanophotonic integrated circuits: a non-volatile quasi-continuously reprogrammable platform,” written by Jiajiu Zheng from the University of Washington, Seattle and his colleagues, discussed the design, fabrication, and characterization of silicon microresonators integrated with Ge-Sb-Te phase-change materials, and demonstrated non-volatile switching of the devices through phase change [1]. The selection committee was particularly impressed by the level of depth and detail and the quality of writing, as well as the prospect of the technology’s application in optics and photonics.

Jiajiu Zheng is a research assistant currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA. He received his M.S. in Optical Engineering from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 2015 and his B.S. in Optoelectronic and Information Engineering from Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Nanjing, China, in 2012. His research interests include but are not limited to silicon photonics, optical computing, and nanophotonics. In particular, his current research focuses on non-volatile programmable silicon photonics using phase-change materials in optical field programmable gate arrays for applications such as data center, neuromorphic computing, and quantum computing.

Please join us in congratulating Jiajiu on his selection as the winner of the 2018 Optical Materials Express Emerging Researcher Best Paper Prize!
