Abstract
The Optical Society of America, founded in 1916, boasts an exciting history
intertwined with many of the key scientific advances of the 21st century. John N.
Howard, from 1960 until 1987 the editor of Applied Optics, has agreed to highlight some
key moments in OSA history in a new OPN column. Former OSA President W. Lewis Hyde and
former OSA Executive Director Jarus Quinn will be working closely with Howard. The three
welcome contributions and suggestions from readers.
