Abstract
Serious discussions about how the Optical Society should survive and grow
in the post-World War II years began with
the formation, in October 1957, of the
Committee on Future Policies, chaired by
Walter Baird. In March 1958, the committee
recommended to the Board that the Society
establish a central office. It also recommended
that OSA launch a second journal,
one centered on applications of optical science.
The resulting publication, Applied
Optics, first appeared in January 1962.
