Abstract
Bruce H. Billings, OSA’s president in 1971, helped to establish OSA’s Washington office and launch the journal Applied Optics—along with the career of the woman who served as its managing editor for 30 years. In 1991, Bruce wrote a letter to OSA in which he reminisced about his experiences with the Society; its contents have been adapted and presented here. Billings died in October 1992 at the age of 77.
