The smartphone is, with no doubt, one the most popular and useful technological devices of the last decade. With the integration of built-in compact cameras, smartphones became a powerful and versatile tool for a wide variety of common activities. Not surprisingly, the resolution and image quality of the cameras is subjected to the most strict and exhaustive quality tests. Such tests are commonly implemented on assembled cameras; therefore, faulty cameras are hard to repair and, in some cases, have to be completely discarded. In this context, the authors of this publication provide a revolutionary method to improve this testing step. In their method, they employ another revolutionary device based on liquid crystal technology, the Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). Such a device allows researchers to manipulate on demand, and in a reconfigurable way, the properties of an incoming light beam; a property the authors use to their advantage. More precisely, their proposal consists of incorporating a SLM as part of the overall testing system and by taking advantage of its programmable phase modulation, to address in a fast and reliable way the typical errors associated with the group of lenses under test, and in this way reducing the assembly tolerances.
