Enabling polarization-resolved microscopy at high resolution, high throughput, and at low cost: this challenge was recently taken up by Yang and coauthors, who propose a compact imaging platform with unique capabilities. While traditional polarization-resolved microscopy requires dedicated hardware solutions, such as stress-free objective lenses and various adjustable polarization elements, the solution by this group of researchers consists of a mere low-cost diffuser integrated with polarization film on motorized stages. They, however, did not leave it at reducing costs and demonstrated their prototype to be capable of achieving imaging throughput comparable to state-of-the art whole slide scanners with sub-micron resolution. The study is complemented with convincing polarization-resolved microscopy applications for life science and biomedical imaging, such as imaging malaria-infected red blood cells, calcium phosphate crystals from urine samples, and a thyroid smear.
