19.34 cm2 large-area quaternary organic photovoltaic module with 12.36% certified efficiency
Donor-acceptor organic solar cells have taken their place among the best photovoltaic devices due to their promising optoelectronic properties and tunability. In this work, researchers from Hangzhou report the first large-scale, highly efficient organic solar cell module based on a quaternary system. The approach involves mixing one polymer donor PM6, one fullerene acceptor PC71BM and two non-fullerene acceptors Y6 and ITIC providing a smooth and uniform active layer for the solar cell. In comparison to binary or ternary systems, the quaternary system exhibits more balanced charge transport, as a result of improved charge separation and electron mobility. The accurate optimization of the concentration of the various components was accomplished by simultaneously improving the short-circuit current, fill factor and open-circuit voltage, hence bringing the power conversion efficiency of a small-area device to 16.71% and to 13.25% (certified as 12.36%) for a large-area module. This module, consisting of seven subcells connected in series, was able to charge a cellphone under an LED lamp that prophesizes the proximity of quaternary organic solar cells' commercialization.
