Gain in time-dependent media—a new mechanism
Compression of Faraday lines of force is a way of adding energy to electromagnetic waves. This statement seems natural, when you stop to think about it. Pendry, Galiffi and Huidobro briefly summarise such lines-of-force compression, as a mechanism for gain in time-dependent media, in a two-page memorandum published in the May 2021 issue of Optica. Now, in the current full-length paper, we get to read the full story behind this extremely interesting work. In addition to the fresh insights that this paper gives into the process of amplifying electromagnetic waves, it adds to the already-impressive list of fruitful fundamental ideas that can be arrived at by way of the lines-of-force concept. There are even analogues for water waves and acoustic waves, of the amplification process studied by Pendry and colleagues. I warmly recommend this paper to your attention.
