Tailoring the light distribution of micro-LED displays with a compact compound parabolic concentrator and an engineered diffusor
Micro-light-emitting diodes (µLEDs) are considered as the most promising candidate for next-generation display technology due to their outstanding brightness, excellent chemical robustness, and high optical efficiency. To date, most of the research has been focusing on the device fabrication and integration levels. µLEDs are expected to be applied in conventional displays, such as TVs, as well as in emerging display applications, including near-eye displays and automotive displays. Many emerging display applications have different optical requirements than conventional displays, such as a directional viewing profile. Therefore, new designs of µLED displays for better optical properties are necessary.
In this work, the authors present new designs of µLED displays, from the device and system aspects, to enhance the optical performances for automotive displays by utilizing optical simulations. Their designs tailor the angular intensity distribution of µLEDs and result in a more collimated light source at the system level. Based upon their findings, the proposed µLED display design yields greater optical efficiency, peak brightness, and ambient contrast ratio under high ambient illuminance background. These improvements are critical to increase the sunlight readability of µLEDs for automotive displays, and hence lead to faster recognition by the driver and to promote a safer driving experience.
