Full-Stokes polarization transformations and time sequence metasurface holographic display
The information capacity of metasurface holograms can be significantly augmented by adopting multiplexing techniques. Compared with other multiplexing schemes, such as wavelength (i.e., color), angle, orbital angular momentum, and nonlinear frequency multiplexing, the polarization multiplexing strategy has advantages of simple manipulation and convenient integration with liquid crystals.
In this work, Zhang et al. propose a novel metasurface encoding method to achieve polarization multiplexed holography showing flexible polarization transformations from one full-Stokes space to another. With metasurfaces that are designed and digitalized using a hybrid genetic algorithm, they experimentally demonstrated time sequence holographic display and complex optical encryption by changing input/output polarizations in real time. They also demonstrate a large field of view with numerical aperture reaching 0.8 and a high conversion efficiency of 40%. The proposed encoding rules, with larger information capacity over other schemes, will expand the display contents of holographic videos and enhance the security of polarization encryption, promoting applications such as dynamic display and optical encryption.
