A fast, cheap and accurate method for blood sample assessment remains elusive at the point-of-care medical facilities. A complete blood count (CBC) test is typically used to measure red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, platelets and the amount of red blood cells in the blood. A health care provider may need to see the results of a CBC test along with the results of some other tests as well for a complete diagnosis. Currently, the methods for CBC testing are expensive and are only used at large facilities. The authors of this article have developed a low-cost device: an ultraviolet LED based microscopy system that can be used for such CBC tests and for other label-free imaging at molecular resolution. This device has the potential to be a complementary diagnostic tool in the hands of health care providers.
