Optical microfiber coil resonator refractometric sensor: erratum

Abstract

An erratum is presented to correct the calculation of the resonator FWHM and sensor detection limit.

In our paper [1], the development of a high-sensitivity, low detection limit refractometric sensor has been proposed. The FWHM of the proposed sensor was estimated to be 10-7nm and a detection limit of 10-10 RIU was predicted.

We have recently discovered a mistake in the calculation of the resonator FWHM, the correct magnitude of which has been estimated to be 10-4nm. This affects the minimum detection limit, which as a result is estimated to be 10-7 RIU.

Therefore line 6 in the abstract should read “resolution as low as 10-7 are predicted”; on page 7893, at lines 2 and 3 “the FWHM is 4×10-4 nm and the detection limit is 10-6-10-7 RIU” and at line 4 of the Conclusion, “Detection limits of the order of 10-7 have also been predicted”.

Finally, in Table 1, the last row should be modified as follows:

As a concluding remark, we would like to stress that the microfiber coil resonator still provides the lowest detection limit. Moreover, if the best measured propagation loss is used [2] in the evaluation of the FWHM, a FWHM of 10-5nm is obtained. Compared to other microresonator sensors, this novel device has potentially the largest Q-factor and the lowest detection limit.
